Earth Day 2025: Impact on the World

Earth Day is celebrated annually on the 22nd of April, and has been a medium for climate activists across the globe to advocate for increased sustainable practices. Introduced in 1970, Earth Day has played a huge role in spreading awareness about climate change and its impacts. Major environmental protocols, like the Paris Accord (2016) were also signed on this day, and have ensured that nations from across the world have acted towards achieving their carbon emission goals.

Earth Day 2025 Theme: “OUR POWER, OUR PLANET”

This year, the theme for Earth Day was “OUR POWER, OUR PLANET,” with a special focus on renewable energy, which urged people from all over the world to partake in carbon offsetting programs. Renewable energy is the energy of the future and it is imperative that its usage becomes more commonplace in society. This argument is supported by the fact that the Earth’s temperatures have been increasing exponentially due to the continued use of non-renewable fossil fuels.

Community Action and the Push for Clean Energy

Earth Day 2025 emphasized how the smallest of actions can have the biggest impacts, as it encouraged people to educate, advocate and mobilize their communities for the fight against climate change and non-renewable energy, as it aims to triple clean energy usage by 2030. The Earth Day website (https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2025/) also had a detailed interactive map that listed out carbon off-setting programs from across the world, which users could join.

Celebrities and Global Icons Supporting Earth Day

Interestingly, over the years, icons like Price Harry of Sussex, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Watson and Dia Mirza have voiced their opinions about the importance of Earth Day. UN Ambassadors like Dia Mirza have also been advocating for increased climate action and have helped in spreading awareness about the threat that it poses on our future, and the future of the upcoming generations. Furthermore, due to these celebrities encouraging it, Earth Day participation numbers have increased, with an estimated 1 billion people having participated in this year’s Earth Day.

The Problem of Greenwashing on Earth Day

However, there are some criticisms regarding Earth Day. A major issue that plagues Earth Day is the fact that multiple companies use it as an opportunity to promote their sustainability agendas, but often none of them come to fruition. This process is known as “Greenwashing” and has effectively manipulated people for years.

Conclusion: The Real Essence of Earth Day 2025

In conclusion, Earth Day is celebrated in the hope that people around the world realize the severity of the climate crisis and act on it. While this hope prospers, in its shadows lie the capitalistic interests of certain companies that try to boost their profits by ruining the essence of the occasion.
